Bechtel used EON software to help visualize a complex anchoring arrangement for the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge foundations. A caisson, which is a massive, rectangular 130-foot-long, 80-foot-wide, 78-foot-high concrete structure, weighing approximately 14,000 tons and composed of about 50,000 cubic yards of concrete and over 2,500 tons of steel, was recently floated into position near Gig Harbor. Heavy currents would make it difficult to keep the caisson in place. The scheme for anchoring not only the caisson, but several barges and tugboats as well, was first rendered as 2D drawings. To better convey the crucial 3 dimensional aspects of this arrangement to project engineers, we developed a 3D EON model," stated Carl Johnson, Bechtel's Engineering Visualization Group Supervisor.
